Seth Godin on Life, the Internet and Everything

Seth Godin on Life, the Internet and Everything
So tell 10 people. There are 10 people who trust you enough to listen. And if you tell your thing to 10 people, if you send your ebook to 10 people, if you do your sermon to 10 people or show your product to 10 people, and none of them want to tell their friends, and none of them are changed, then you failed. You didn’t really understand what was good. But if some of them tell their friends, then they’ll tell their friends and that’s how ideas spread. So it’s this 10 at a time, 10 by 10 by 10. How do you put an idea in the word that resonates enough with people, if they trust you enough to hear it, that then it can go to the next step and the next step.

Celebrating Mary Oliver

Celebrating Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver passed away two days ago. She is a renowned poet who won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. I first learned about her on the Tara Brach podcast, and have been inspired by this poem ever since:

The Summer Day by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Today, I also listened to a podcast conversation between Mary Oliver and Krista Tippett. Find it here or wherever you listen to podcasts. You can also read many other poems by Mary Oliver on Facebook.

Tara Brach on Rewiring for Happiness and Freedom – Part 1

Tara Brach on Rewiring for Happiness and Freedom – Part 1
If you want a positive experience to take root and start informing your life, you have to on purpose sustain your attention and actually in an embodied way feel the pleasantness of it. And then it goes into implicit memory and then it’s available for recall. So this really is a very explicit training of the mind.
Tara Brach, Part 1 – Rewiring for Happiness and Freedom

Tara makes the point that you need to give the experience at least 15-30 seconds if you want it to become a trait over time. Watch or listen to the whole episode of Part 1 – Rewiring for Happiness and Freedom with Tara Brach here.

Kobe Bryant on The School of Greatness

Kobe Bryant on The School of Greatness
I think stories is what moves the world, whether it’s an inspirational story or it’s an informational one, nothing in this world moves without story be it in the political world, sports world. Nothing that we have moves without story and so I think that is the root of everything and if we’re gonna try and make the world a better place, a story’s the right place.
